I made this cake for my friend Kena's old school (80/90s) 30th birthday party. I made all of the attachment pieces (knobs, chain, etc) using a 50/50 gumpaste fondant mix in advance. Once the pieces had hardened, I added the embellishments and coloring. I then covered the cake in pink fondant and attached the pieces using drops of icing. The cake was surrounded by now and laters to complete the old school look!
Adventures in Cake Decorating
Welcome to Adventures in Cake Decorating! I decided to start a blog to share some of cake decorating projects. I began cake decorating in the Fall of 2010, when I took the Wilton courses offered through Michaels. Since this time, I have continued to complete projects to challenge myself and improve my skills! I hope that this blog will serve as a place for ideas and sharing!! Enjoy!!

Gift Box Cake!
So my whole purpose of taking the fondant class was to make a gift box cake. I saw a picture of one in Michaels and instantly thought...."I want to make that!". SO I DID! I made this cake for Christmas 2010. The cake was baked and shaped in a square pan. I made the bow of the cake first using red tinted 50/50 fondant/gum past. I made several loops out of the mixure. I let the loops sit overnight using bunches of paper towel in the loop to maintain the shape. I then tinted some fondant green and covered the cake. I used red fondant to make the ribbon on the cake. Using little dabs of buttercream icing, I assembled the loops into a bow.
Fall Cake!
For my family's Thanksgiving 2010 dinner, I decided to make a fall themed cake. To cover the cake, I tinted the fondant brown. (TIP: either buy brown fondant or use cocoa mix to assist with the tinting process). I then created several leaves using green, orange, yellow, and red tinted 50/50 fondant/gum paste mix. (TIP: the leaves have to sit overnight to harden). I attached the leaves to the cake using small dabs of chocolate icing. The cake was enjoyed by all and was DEVOURED by the next morning!!
Fondant Class Final Project
For my final project in the Wilton Fondant class, we were asked to bake and decorate a cake using fondant and gum paste. I covered the cake in white fondant and added the black stripes using black tinted fondant. The daisies on the top were created using a 50/50 fondant/gum paste mix.
My First Buttercream Project!
I made a cake for my friend Jenny's 27th birthday. I decided to go with a girly theme for this cake. The buttercream icing was tinted pink and I decorated the cake with a purse and shoes (two of Jenny's favorite things!)
